A day after the BJP announced candidates for the posts of mayor and chairpersons for various MCs, the Congress on Saturday released its list of candidates. In Karnal, the Congress has fielded former deputy mayor Manoj Wadhwa for the mayoral poll.

Wadhwa was elected as deputy mayor in 2013. He had unsuccessfully contested the Assembly poll in 2014 on INLD ticket against former CM Manohar Lal Khattar, while his wife Asha Wadhwa had contested last mayoral election in December 2018 against BJP candidate Renu Bala Gupta. She lost in a close contest.

After the election, Wadhwa had joined the BJP and before the Lok Sabha elections in 2024, he had joined the Congress.

After the Assembly elections, disappointment prevails among the Congress workers. Now, the party has fielded a youth and Punjabi face for the mayor’s post.

Wadhwa claimed that he would win the election with a huge margin. “I am thankful to the party leadership for fielding me as the party’s candidate. We will win the seat by a massive margin,” he added.
