A day after the BJP announced tickets for mayoral and chairperson candidates for various MCs, the Congress, too, has announced its list. In Karnal, the party has fielded former Deputy Mayor Manoj Wadhwa.

Wadhwa was elected as councillor and was further elected as Deputy Mayor in 2013.

He had unsuccessfully contested the 2014 Assembly elections on INLD ticket against former Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar. His wife Asha Wadhwa had also contested the last mayoral elections in December 2018 against BJP candidate Renu Bala Gupta. She lost the elections in a close contest. After this, Wadhwa joined the BJP and before the Lok Sabha elections in 2024, he joined the Congress.

Since the Congress' defeat in the recent Lok Sabha and Assembly elections, disappointment prevails among the party workers. Now, the party has fielded a young Punjabi face for the post of Mayor.

Wadhwa claimed that he would win the elections with a huge margin. He expressed gratitude towards the party leadership for reposing faith in him.

“I am thankful to the party leadership for fielding me as the party's candidate. We will win the seat with a massive margin,” he said.
