Residents of Rohtak city have been getting a contaminated drinking water supply for over two months, due to which they are being forced to either buy drinking water or fetch it from far-off places.

The supply of contaminated water is also affecting the health of residents. Water-borne diseases are on the rise in the city. However, no corrective measures have been taken by the authorities.

“Contaminated water is being supplied for drinking in our colony. As the water is unfit for drinking, we have been fetching drinking water from the PGIMS campus,” says Rubal Batra, a local businessman and resident of Model Town.

He said he recently contracted a stomach infection and fever due to contaminated water, adding that residents of his colony had been falling ill due to waterborne diseases.

Residents said that they were either buying water from private suppliers or big bottles of mineral water.

“The supply of drinking water had improved after repeated complaints made by the residents and the issue being highlighted by the media, but the situation has deteriorated again. We are getting blackish water, which cannot be used for drinking,” said Gaurav Badhwar, a local lawyer who is vocal about social issues.

Residents said that the water being supplied for drinking was not even fit for washing clothes and utensils.

Residents said the authorities concerned should take some concrete steps to ensure the supply of clean potable water as it was their basic right.
