A Haryana police constable, who was posted outside the residence of Cabinet minister Rao Narbir Singh in Gurugram, reportedly died by suicide by consuming some poisonous substance following the alleged social boycott of his family at his native village.

His nephew had married the same-gotra girl, following which the panchayat had boycotted his family. The police handed over the body to the family after a postmortem today. An FIR pertaining to abetment to suicide has been registered against seven people, including the sarpanch’s husband, at the Civil Lines police station.

The police said the constable had been identified as 49-year-old Jagbir Singh, a resident of Bhoorawas village in Jhajjar district. He had joined the police as a constable in 2014. He previously served in the Jat Regiment of the Army and joined the police after retirement.

According to the police, he was on duty on Monday night and committed suicide by consuming some poisonous substance. On Tuesday morning, when other policemen arrived for change of duty, they found Jagbir unconscious and informed the police. He was taken to a nearby private hospital, where he was declared brought dead.

“During investigation, it was found that constable Jagbir's nephew had eloped with a girl from his own clan four months ago. Because of this, the villagers held a panchayat and boycotted Jagbir's family, causing him distress. He was also facing a case of obtaining a job under a false name. He took two days off and went to his village and apologised,” said a senior investigating officer.
