Faridabad, July 10

A case has been registered against the police post in the NIT area and the CIA police station in Sector 65 here in connection with the death of a 26-year-old youth in police custody. Sources revealed that unidentified police personnel were booked on various charges, including murder.

This comes after the deceased’s kin and the activists of the Bhim Army held a protest over the youth’s custodial death. Identified as Amit, the victim was arrested by the personnel of the NIT police post after an incident of stabbing in a shopping mall on July 6. Amit was taken to the CIA police station in Sector 65 and found dead on the morning of July 7.

About the case

  • The deceased, identified as Amit, was arrested over an incident of stabbing in a shopping mall on July 6. He was found dead in a police station on July 7.
  • Cops had claimed that he had died by suicide, while his family had accused the police of murdering him.
  • The deceased’s brother said Amit was also injured in the counter-stabbing by another person involved in the incident, but the police had named Amit as the prime accused and did not register his complaint.

The police had claimed on Monday that the youth, who had been booked on the attempt-to-murder charge, had died by suicide inside the police station.

However, the deceased’s family had accused the police of murdering Amit. They had refused to take Amit’s body till a case was registered, said a police official.

The deceased’s brother, Sumit, claimed that Amit was also injured in the counter-stabbing by another person, but the police had named Amit as the prime accused and did not register his complaint.

The authorities had ordered a magisterial probe into Amit’s death. The matter was also placed before the state and National Human Rights Commission.
