Criminal killed in crossfire with police in Yamunanagar

An armed miscreant was killed in a crossfire between him and the police in Yamunanagar district late on Friday. The deceased has been identified as Rajat of Shergarh village of Karnal district.

He was allegedly associated with a gang and carried a reward of Rs 50,000, besides facing seven criminal cases.

In this firing incident, sub-inspector Rakesh Kumar, incharge of CIA-II of Yamunanagar police, sustained bullet injuries on his arm and was admitted to Yamunanagar Civil Hospital.

The CIA-II unit of Yamunanagar police got information from the control room that Rajat was seen roaming in areas falling under Sadar police station, Yamunanagar, and Radaur police station with weapons and he could commit a crime.

On this, CIA-II incharge Rakesh Kumar formed two teams.

One of the teams laid a naka on the under-construction Ambala-Shamli highway near Gheshpur village last night.

The police team reportedly spotted a man coming at high speed on a motorcycle. They tried to stop him, but seeing the police vehicle, the motorcycle rider tried to speed away and fell down. Then, he started firing on the police team.

The police retaliated and, in the crossfire, Rajat and the incharge of CIA-II sustained injuries.

Both were rushed to the trauma centre of Civil Hospital, Yamunanagar, where Rajt died during treatment.

Kamaldeep Goyal, Superintendent of Police, Yamunanagar, said that 16-17 rounds were fired from both sides.

“Three miscreants, including Rajat, fired at a showroom in Model Town, Yamunanagar, on September 14. A total of seven criminal cases were registered against Rajat and he was carrying a reward of Rs 50,000 on his head,” said Goyal.

He said that Rajat was associated with a gang also.

After the post-mortem examination, Rajat’s body was today handed over to his kin.

A case under Arms Act and several Sections of the BNS was registered at Radaur police station today in connection with this firing incident.
