The paediatric haematology-oncology facility has begun at the Civil Hospital in Ambala Cantonment. It has become the first town in the state to have a public sector facility to cure paediatric cancer, thalassaemia and other blood disorders in children.

Dr Kuldeep Singh, Civil Surgeon, said the new facility was formally launched with the posting of Dr Vaneet, a paediatric haematology-oncologist who had come from Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Hospital in Delhi.

“With this, paediatric blood disorder, cancer and thalassaemia patients will no longer be required to rush to Chandigarh or other places for treatment,” said the Civil Surgeon.

He disclosed that a four-year-old girl suffering from low haemoglobin and enlarged liver and spleen was the first patient to report at the facility.

“As per the patient’s requirement, a bone marrow aspiration and biopsy for diagnosis and management was successfully performed at the new facility,” he added.

According to official figures, at least 30 toddlers suffering from paediatric blood disorder, cancer and thalassaemia had been reported at various health facilities in the district in the past couple of months.
