Dabwali fire tragedy victims remembered

On the 29th anniversary of the devastating Dabwali fire tragedy, residents and dignitaries gathered at Bhumi Ashram to pay tribute to the 442 lives lost in the catastrophic incident of December 23, 1995, in Dabwali town of Sirsa district. The tragedy claimed the lives of 173 children, including five-year-old Surbhi Rao, the daughter of retired ADGP Anil Kumar Rao.

The Surbhi Manav Kalyan Trust, established in Surbhi’s memory, organised the event. Warm clothes and meals were distributed to the residents of the ashram as a tribute to the victims. Surender Narang, president of the trust, emphasised the importance of remembering the lives lost and extending support to the community. Anil Kumar Rao, who was posted as DSP in Dabwali during the tragedy, had himself sustained severe burns while attempting to rescue children trapped in the fire.

The event saw participation of Anil Rao’s family, including his son Vikram Rao, daughter-in-law Kirti Rao, and daughter Ruchika Rao.
