Bhagat Phool Singh Mahila Vishwavidyalaya, Khanpur Kalan, on Monday celebrated the 140th birth anniversary of Bhagat Phool Singh, the founder of the university.

The Dean (Student Welfare) organised the 17th National Youth Parliament under the aegis of Parliamentary Affairs, Government of India, on the occasion.

Cooperation, Prison, Heritage and Tourism Minister Dr Arvind Sharma was the chief guest while Vice-Chancellor Sudesh presided over the event. Dr Sharma paid floral tributes to Bhagat Phool Singh on the occasion.

Addressing the gathering, the minister said today was the birth anniversary of a great man who contributed greatly to the field of education, and worked for the greater interest of society.

Congratulating the university for organising the youth parliament, the minister said our daughters would run the country in future.

Organising such events inculcated a sense of leadership among the students, he added. Sharma appealed to women to not forget their values, no matter how high they reached in.

On the occasion, he released a book titled Subhashini Gaurav Gatha.

The Vice-Chancellor said confidence was increasing among girl students, and the future of the country was definitely going to be brighter because of it.

After the oath-taking ceremony of the youth parliament, Ritika, who was assigned the prime minister post, paid tributes to former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh. Speaking during the question hour, Nidhi, entasked with representing an opposition MP, called the One Nation, One Election policy a threat to the independence of states and the federal structure of India, and said the system stood against democracy.

Lakshita, playing the part of the minister of law and justice, said the policy was a visionary step to make democracy more organised and effective.

Parliamentary functioning representative Dr Shalini Sharma praised the functioning of the students and announced the winners — Shikha (speaker) stood first, Ritika (PM) second, and Lakshita (law minister) third place.

Annu Swami (education minister) stood fourth, and Kritika and Sara Tyagi (opposition MPs) fifth.

Programme director Shweta Singh said 55 girl students from various departments of the university participated in the youth parliament.
