Illegal cuts on highways are one of the reasons behind road mishaps in the district. Taking a serious note of it, Deputy Commissioner (DC) Abhishek Meena has directed the officials concerned to get all illegal cuts on the highways closed so as to avert road accidents.

The direction was issued at a review meeting of the district-level road safety committee held here recently. He also instructed the officials to take necessary steps to bring down the number of road accidents in the district.

“Accident-prone points should be identified in the district and all illegal cuts on the highways be closed with immediate effect. Police officials should also regularly update accident-related reports on the portal, besides making people aware of traffic rules,” said the DC at the meeting.

Meena also instructed the officials of the Public Works Department, Municipal Corporation, NHAI and other related departments to inspect the roads at regular intervals to know about their condition. Pothole-ridden roads should be repaired with immediate effect to prevent accidents. Departments concerned should ensure maintenance of their roads, he said.

“Officials concerned are directed to identify accident-prone areas. Signboards should be displayed properly and speed breakers should be installed to slow down traffic for the safety of road users. Special attention should be paid to prevent mishaps in accident-prone areas. Those not following traffic rules such as riding a two-wheeler without helmet, not wearing seat belt, driving on the wrong side and red light jumping should be issued challans,” said the DC.

Meena also directed the officials concerned to get marking done on all roads and routes. “An audit of every accident should also be done to identify the reason behind the mishap,” he said.
