Decline in number of accidental deaths in Kurukshetra in 2024
A decline in the number of road accidental deaths have been observed in Kurukshetra with 188 people losing lives in 2024 compared to nearly 260 reported in 2023.
As per the data obtained from the Kurukshetra police, 464 road accidents, including 201 fatal and 263 non-fatal accidents, were reported in which 188 people lost their lives and 413 people were injured. In 2023, 499 road accidents were reported in which nearly 260 people had lost their lives and 435 had suffered injuries.
Meanwhile, cracking a whip on traffic rules violators, the Kurukshetra police have issued 41,868 challans in the district and recovered fines to the tune of Rs 63.79 lakh last year.
As per the district police wrong lanes, driving without license, without registration certificate, without helmet, wrong side, overspeeding, triple riding and without insurance continue to be the major traffic rules violations.
Kurukshetra police spokesman Naresh Sagwal said regular awareness camps were held in educational institutions and special drives were also organised to educate people about the traffic norms. Using of mobile phone while driving and riding two-wheelers was among the most common violations that could be observed on roads. Even on the Delhi-Ambala national highway, the unauthorised access points were being closed by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and it would further help in reducing the number of accidents.
Besides these, following the directions of Superintendent of Police special drives against traffic rule violations were also conducted. Action was also being taken against the people using modified silencers to emit cracking sounds from the two-wheelers as these caused panic among the fellow motorists that could lead to a major accident. Directions were been issued to the mechanics, who changed the silencers, not to make such modifications as legal action would be initiated against them too.
Meanwhile, Kurukshetra Superintendent of Police Varun Singla said, “Sincere efforts are being made by the district police to prevent road accidents for which various measures are being taken. Speed limit is fixed on all national and state highways, and stringent enforcement of Motor Vehicle Act is being ensured. A total of 41,868 challans were issued against the violators in 2024. We are focusing on lane driving and a total of 11,755 challans were issued for the violation of lane driving and 66 cases were registered under Sections 285 of BNS and 18 persons were also apprehended.”
“Road Safety Quiz were organised in which nearly 1,44,000 students participated and they were made aware regarding traffic rules. A total of 55 awareness programmes were conducted to make public aware about traffic rules, including providing reflector tapes on heavy vehicles. As many as 32 hospitals have been on boarded in the Baseline Survey App to provide timely trauma care. Nine black spots were identified and rectification is being carried out,” the SP said.
