Dense fog returns to region, raises concerns for wheat crop

A dense fog engulfed the region on Friday evening, reducing visibility to around 10 m. The sudden onset of fog, which began around 6 pm, came as a surprise to residents who had enjoyed bright sunshine during the day.

According to weather experts, the climatic conditions in the coming days depend on wind velocity and the presence of clouds on Saturday. Agricultural scientists have expressed concern over the impact of the sudden weather change on the wheat crop.

The increased moisture due to fog could lead to an outbreak of yellow rust disease and other fungal infections, posing a threat to yield quality. Farmers are advised to remain vigilant and take preventive measures.

Dr Virender Lather, a retired principal scientist of IARI Delhi, cautioned, “Fog increases humidity, creating a favourable environment for yellow rust and other fungal diseases. Farmers should regularly inspect their fields and consider timely fungicide sprays to protect the crop.”

The unexpected weather change has put farmers on alert.
