Tangri is a seasonal river that swells during heavy rainfall in the Shivalik region. While its danger mark is 15,400 cusecs, the river received over 43,000 cusecs of water this season, causing flooding in several colonies situated on the riverbed, adjoining areas and the industrial zone.

An official of the Irrigation Department said that the work would be undertaken along a 20-km stretch from the Punjab border to Hisar Road. “The river’s creek will be widened and the riverbed deepened to ensure a smooth flow of water,” the official added.

Haryana Cabinet Minister Anil Vij said the work to deepen the riverbed had begun earlier this year but was halted due to the monsoon. “As the rainy season is over, the Irrigation Department has been instructed to resume work from November 15. The desilting and deepening of the Tangri will enhance its water-carrying capacity and prevent flooding during the monsoon,” he said.

He added that directions had also been issued for the construction of three causeways on the Tangri and the installation of a water-lifting pump near Ramgarh Majra village to divert water into the river.

The minister further said that approval had been granted to connect the pump house in the Ambala Cantonment Industrial Area to a power hotline to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply. “The pump house will soon be connected to the hotline. Besides this, a boundary wall will be constructed to protect the industrial area from flooding,” Vij said.
