Haryana Vidhan Sabha Speaker Harvinder Kalyan on Wednesday told students there is no shortcut to success in life, urging them to embrace discipline and hard work as the true mantra of achievement, while steering clear of substance abuse.

Kalyan was addressing students at Sports University Haryana in Rai as the chief guest during the university’s induction ceremony. The event was also graced by Arjuna Awardee Sandeep Narwal, double gold medallist Sumit Antil and India’s youngest Everest conqueror, Shivangi Pathak, as special speakers.

“Sports are not only a career option but also teach us how to live,” Kalyan said. “Struggle and hard work are the weapons through which youth can achieve their goals.”

He added young people are the future heroes of India, who would propel the country to new heights through their dedication, enthusiasm, and courage.

“Sports are not just a means of competition or a career choice, but a way of life. They teach us discipline, hard work, team spirit, and patience,” he said. “If young people embrace sports and stay away from addiction, then success in life is assured.”

Kalyan also expressed confidence in the leadership of Vice-Chancellor Ashok Kumar, saying the university would scale new heights under his guidance.

The Vice-Chancellor said transformation in life demands relentless effort. He noted the university’s significant growth — from 400 students last year to over 700 admissions this year. The athletes have already won 27 medals, with a target of more than 40 medals this year, he said.

He emphasised India should aim for maximum medals by the 2036 Olympics, asserting no achievement is beyond reach with determination and consistent effort.

Sharing her experience, Shivangi Pathak said noble dreams and clear intentions are key to success. She urged students never to give up or compromise on their aspirations.

Arjuna Awardee Sandeep Narwal highlighted Haryana’s strong sporting identity and urged students to stay off drugs while working with dedication to bring pride to the state and nation at the global level.

Gold medallist Sumit Antil urged the students by saying that challenges should never lead to surrender. He stressed that success is inevitable if one pursues their goals with honesty and persistence.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Registrar Jaswinder Singh. It was attended by the university’s deans, officials, school staff, students and local social workers.
