‘Diversification can boost agricultural production’
The Department of Agronomy, Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University (HAU), recently organised a field day programme on the role of crop science in sustainable crop production.
Vice-Chancellor BR Kamboj was the chief guest at the event.
The VC urged scientists to educate farmers about advanced seed varieties, bio-fertilisers and sustainable farming techniques.
He emphasised the need to raise awareness among farmers about low-cost, high-yielding crops and organic farming methods to improve soil health.
He said adopting crop diversification could help farmers increase their agricultural production.
Farmers should be made aware of methods for controlling weeds, pests and diseases, he added.
Kamboj inspected various ongoing experiments on wheat, mustard, chickpea and other Rabi crops at the Agronomy Department’s research farm.
He also reviewed the progress of research related to new agricultural techniques and provided necessary guidance for the experiments.
The VC advised all departments to work in tandem with one another, and said, with shrinking farm sizes, scientists needed to focus more on developing high-yielding crops.
Kamboj also participated in a tree plantation drive at the department’s research field.
Dr Rajbir Garg, Director of Research, elaborated on the research being conducted by the university on various topics such as climate change, food security, environmental concerns and the latest farming technologies.
Dr Sanjay Thakral, Head of Department, provided detailed information on the department’s ongoing work.
