Congress general secretary and Sirsa MP Kumari Selja has said the government must accept that the parivar pehchan patra (PPP) had turned into a 'family problem card' and thus becoming a source of distress for the people.

The Punjab and Haryana High Court has also directed the Haryana Government to take immediate corrective steps so that no citizen was deprived of essential services due to the lack of a family identification card. Additionally, the mandatory requirement for PPP should be abolished.

In a statement issued here, Selja said the government had forcibly imposed the PPP on the public and its flaws had created unnecessary trouble for them. She alleged that corruption took place under the guise of PPP, and to date, the errors in PPP had not been rectified.

While hearing a petition related to PPP, the High Court stated in its order that fundamental services essential for the survival of individuals or communities, such as drinking water, education, healthcare, electricity, sanitation and emergency services like police and fire, were being made conditional upon production of the PPP.

Therefore, all corrective measures should be taken immediately to ensure that no citizen is deprived of essential services due to the absence of PPP. Selja said the government often did not acknowledge the information provided in PPP and demanded separate certificates, making the purpose of PPP redundant.

The Sirsa MP said the government must accept its mistake after the high court's order and abolish the mandatory requirement for PPP. She said the identification of fundamental and essential services based on PPP was incorrect.

Selja demanded that the government should correct any errors in PPP at its own expense and not burden the affected citizens with the costs.
