Kanishk Chauhan, an all-rounder who learned his fundamentals in Sirsa and trained here for nearly a decade, has been named to the India Under-19 squad for the Asia Cup 2024, beginning December 12. Officials say this is the first time a player from Sirsa will represent India at an Asian Cricket Council tournament.

Calling it the district’s “biggest sporting achievement”, Sirsa Cricket Association president Dr Ved Beniwal said at a felicitation ceremony at Shah Satnam Ji Cricket Stadium that Kanishk’s selection marks a milestone.

“A player from Sirsa entering such a major tournament will be a golden chapter in the district’s cricket history,” he said.

Originally from Jhajjar, Kanishk impressed selectors with his performances in England and Australia, followed by strong outings in the Challenger Trophy and a tri-series against Afghanistan.

“This is a major opportunity in my career. I am fully focused on performing for India,” he said.

Coach Jaskaran Singh, who tracked his progress from the England stint, said the rise was expected.

“We knew he would achieve something big. Now he is set to represent India in a crucial tournament,” he said.

India will take on Pakistan in a high-voltage clash on December 14.

Meanwhile, 16-year-old arm wrestler Nihal is set to wear India’s colours at the Asian Armwrestling Cup 2025 in Ajman, UAE. Born in Sirsa in 2008, he is among Haryana’s youngest competitive armwrestlers, known for his explosive right-hand power and disciplined training routine.

Currently studying computer science at Bennett University, Greater Noida, Nihal trains in calisthenics, grip strength and table technique — much of it enabled by his father.

“My father Kulwinder Singh built a professional armwrestling table for me in May 2025. He supported me in everything I needed, he made it happen,” he said.

Nihal has competed in multiple state and national events, earning a spot in the Indian contingent for the Asian Cup. He also trains younger athletes in wrist control, grip strength and arm power.

With both Kanishk and Nihal preparing for major continental contests, Sirsa sports officials say the district is rapidly emerging as a multi-disciplinary talent hub to watch.
