The state government is mulling strict action against drivers and owners of overloaded vehicles. A driver may risk losing his licence, while the owner may lose the registration certificate (RC) and goods carriage permit of the vehicle if it is found loaded with weight more than the permissible limit.

‘Drivers from other states to blame’

  • “Drivers from other states overload their vehicles with construction material and sell it in Haryana at cheap rates,” said Rampal Kamboj, president of the association

An order in this connection was issued by Dr SS Phulia, Transport Commissioner, to all secretaries of the Regional Transport Authorities (RTAs) on December 10.

To discuss the matter, a video-conference was held on December 2.

It was decided that provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, should be invoked to curb the menace of overloaded vehicles.

“Transporters are being made aware of the problems caused by overloaded vehicles. The first-time offenders will be let off with a fine. But habitual offenders will risk losing their driver’s licences, registration certificates and permits,” said Dr SS Phulia, Transport Commissioner, Haryana.

The Yamunanagar’s Stone Crushers’ Association, however, has a different take on the matter. It blames the authorities for allowing overloaded vehicles from other states enter Haryana.

Rampal Kamboj, president, Stone Crushers’ Association, Yamunanagar, said: “Stone crusher owners of Haryana don’t load vehicles beyond the permissible limit. They have been following the state government’s order on overloading. Drivers from other states overload their vehicles with construction material and sell it in Haryana at cheap rates, causing loss to the mining business here.”
