The poor enrolment in government primary schools in Haryana has become a cause for concern for the Education Department. As per a report of the Directorate of School Education, there are eight primary and middle schools in the state which have enrolment of just one student. Besides, 16 government primary schools have two students each while 12 schools have only three students each.

The report revealed that 765 primary schools have enrolment of less than 20 students. Moreover, 207 schools have enrolment of students in single digit (less than 10 students). Two of the eight schools having just one student are located in Hisar and Mahendregarh district.

A teacher of a primary school in Hisar district, requesting anonymity, said they have carried out surveys of the entire region, including the village and adjoining dhanis, to urge parents to enroll their children in the primary schools. There are two teachers posted in this primary school located in a village of the district.

The report further revealed that there is one school in Mahendragarh district which has only one student in Class III. One school in Hisar district has just one student enrolled in Class IV. There are 228 schools which have nil enrolment in Class I, 313 schools with no students in Class II, 166 schools with no enrolment in Class III, 121 schools having no enrolment in Class IV and 148 government schools without any student in Class V. In the Balvatika — which is a wing in the government schools for enrolment of less than five years of age — 806 schools have just one enrolment in each school.

The District Education Officer, Pradeep Narwal, however, said he has taken charge of the District Elementary Education Office in Hisar today after the suspension of the District Elementary Education Officer. “There was no school having zero enrolment. I have no further report as I have taken charge today itself,” he said.
