The EC has called a press conference at 3 pm springing a surprise by a likely early announcement of Haryana Assembly polls which were held in October 2019.

The ruling BJP is battling massive anti-incumbency in Haryana where the party has been on a spree to announce schemes, including plans to award job quotas to Agniveers. The Opposition has made gaps in the Agniveer scheme and the ongoing farmers' agitation major poll issues in Haryana, where the BJP has been in power for ten years now.

The EC is also likely to honour the Supreme Court orders to conduct Jammu and Kashmir polls before September 30.

The EC held meetings with political parties in both J-K and Haryana recently.

In Haryana, the Congress is hoping to cash in on BJP's anti-incumbency but is facing factionalism within.

The term of Haryana Assembly ends on November 3.
Meanwhile, in the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir the last Assembly election was held in 2014. The last elected government fell in 2018 leading to President's rule in the then state. On August 5, 2019, the J-K Reorganisation Bill divided the state of Jammu and Kashmir into the UTs of J-K and Ladakh.
The Supreme Court had in December 2023, while upholding the constitutionality of abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir, asked the EC to hold elections in J-K by September 30 and restore J-K statehood.
The Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar after the EC's recent J-K visit said time is ripe for polls there and nine political parties EC met called for elections without further delay.
After returning from J-K ,the EC held meetings with Union Home Secretary to assess security requirement for J-K polls.
