With the arrest of an electrician, the team of the Haryana State Enforcement Bureau (HSEB) has busted a racket of "slowing down" electric meters in Panipat, which has caused a huge loss to the Uttar Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam (UHBVN).
The team has identified 34 electricity meters which were slowed down by tampering. The team sent all these meters to laboratory for investigation.
SI Salinder Kumar, SHO, HSEB Panipat unit, said the accused had been identified as Jan Mohammad, alias Janu, of Hari Nagar in the Gannaur area.
The accused was arrested on December 12 and taken on one-day police remand. He was produced in court today again after his one-day remand was over and the court sent him to judicial custody.
Salinder Singh further said that Arshinder Singh Chawla, ADGP, HSEB, received a tipoff about the tampering of electricity meters in Panipat villages. Following this, the team raided Patthargarh village on November 26 and took out 16 meters found suspicious and sent these to the laboratory at Karnal for testing. As per the testing report, six of these were found tampered with and separate cases were registered in the matter.
The team interrogated a person named Harun in the case, who disclosed that he got the meter slowed down by Jan Mohammad of Gannaur. Following his disclosure, the team nabbed the accused on December 12 evening, Salinder Kumar maintained.
The accused revealed that he had slowed down around 40-45 electricity meters, of which 34 had been recovered and sent to the laboratory for testing, the SHO added.
