The Gurugram police have registered a case of death due to negligence against a streetlight maintenance company contracted by the Municipal Corporation Gurugram (MCG) in connection with the electrocution deaths of three persons due to rainfall on Wednesday.
An FIR was filed at the Sector 29 police station.
On Wednesday night, three persons were fatally electrocuted near the IFFCO Chowk Metro station when an uprooted tree struck a live electric cable, causing it to snap and fall into rainwater. The deceased were identified as Waseem (55) from Sangam Vihar in Delhi, Devinder Vajpayee (34) from Unnao, Uttar Pradesh, and Jaipal Yadav (34) from Mahendragarh district in Haryana.
On Thursday morning, when the family members of the deceased visited the site, they observed several exposed wires. This prompted them to file a complaint with the police against the Electricity Corporation and the Municipal Corporation for negligence.
Based on the complaint by Inderjeet Yadav, the brother of deceased Jaipal Yadav, the Gurugram police conducted an investigation. It was revealed that the streetlight maintenance company hired by the MCG had improperly installed the streetlight wires overhead instead of burying them underground, as required.
Following this discovery, a team comprising the police, Electricity Corporation and Municipal Corporation officials inspected the site. They confirmed that the company responsible for maintaining the streetlights had carelessly and incorrectly installed the wires in that area. Consequently, an FIR was registered against the company under Section 106 (death due to negligence) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
