End of political era in Haryana, says ex-minister Sampat Singh

The demise of former Haryana Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala has left an irreplaceable void in the state’s political landscape, said senior Congress leader and former Haryana minister Prof Sampat Singh. Singh, who served as a minister in Chautala's Cabinet, expressed deep sorrow over the loss, calling it a personal and political tragedy.

“I am deeply shocked by the passing of Chaudhary Om Prakash Chautala. His death marks the end of a political era in Haryana,” said Prof Singh.

Highlighting Chautala’s contributions, Singh lauded the late leader’s efforts in rural development, particularly his work in empowering panchayats through financial support. “It is difficult to fill his place,” he said, emphasising Chautala’s unparalleled energy and commitment to public service, even at the age of 89.

Known for his disciplined and simple lifestyle, Chautala left an indelible impression on many, Singh said, recalling his personal association with the leader. Describing him as a political guide and mentor, Singh said, “He had a remarkable memory, calling thousands by their names and his punctuality and administrative grip were exemplary.”

During his tenure as Chief Minister, Chautala earned a reputation as a brilliant orator, an effective organiser, and a compassionate leader who remained deeply connected with the people. Singh added, “He used to have modest meals, eschewed air conditioning in his car and lived a life without luxury despite holding high office.”

Prof Singh credited Chautala with shaping his own political career. “I owe much of my political career to him. He was a guide in my life and a leader who always valued my opinion during Cabinet meetings,” he said.

“The state has lost a great leader in his demise,” Singh added.
