With preparations for the 38th edition of the Surajkund International Craft Fair in full swing, the authorities have proposed to enhance CCTV coverage, expansion of food court and introduction of rural sports like wrestling, for which the host state is known for. However the authorities are yet to decide the theme state, though many contenders are in the race. The fair is scheduled to be held between February 7 and 23.

The authorities intend to enhance security coverage with the installation of more CCTVs and usage of the state-of-the-art technology, like drones, to keep an eye over the movement of suspected elements during the event that attracts thousands of visitors daily, said an official.

He said the number of CCTVs were likely to go up by 50 per cent this time, from 1,200 last year. Claiming that there would be no loophole in security, he said the organisers had also decided to focus on national and international cuisine. They would also be displaying sports like wrestling and boxing.

With BIMSTEC countries to be the partner nation, the authorities are yet to decide the theme state, even as Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Northeastern states are among the contenders.

A governing body meeting of the Surajkund Mela Authority in New Delhi on December 23 also decided to hold cultural, arts events and festivals on the premises throughout the year to make the area a hotspot for national and international events.

The holding of the three-day Gurjar Mahotsav at Surajkund recently is a part of the initiative. Spread over 45 acres, the mela ground will have around 1,200 stalls for artisans and craftspersons, though the number of participants will be around 2,500, according to officials.
