Generally family members of a candidate canvass for his/ her respective constituency but Asha Hooda, wife of former Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, is not only holding the reins of electioneering in Rohtak (other than the Garhi Sampla-Kiloi constituency of her husband) but also canvassing in the Kalanaur and Meham Assembly constituencies of the district as well.

Interestingly, Asha (71), a postgraduate from Kurukshetra University, strikes a chord with voters easily due to her communication and oratory skills, good command over Hindi, English, Punjabi and Haryanvi languages and well understanding of political and social affairs.

In the recent Lok Sabha polls too, she conducted an extensive campaign for her son and Congress candidate Deepender Hooda and also motivated women leaders and workers of the Congress to manage polling booths. Her initiative bore fruits as several female workers of the party discharged the duty of polling agent efficiently and prepared slips for the voters as well.

It was for the first time in Rohtak when the electors saw women activists manning the polling booths in Lok Sabha polls. This Assembly election too, Asha is not only addressing poll meetings but also contacting prominent people of Rohtak Assembly constituency personally to appeal them to vote for Congress candidate Bharat Bhushan Batra, who is in the fray for the third time.

During the poll meetings, she not only flags the issues pertaining to the common man but also cautions people about those forces which intend to divide the society on the lines of religion and castes to serve their personal interests.

On Sunday, Asha attended a programme organised by members of the Ravi Dass community here. While slamming the BJP government over the civic issues, she said those who forced the residents of Rohtak city to live a miserable life in the past decade were now shedding crocodile tears.

She also cautioned people against those spreading misleading information about the Congress.

“Don’t get misled by their words. Ravidass Samaj and Congress have always been together. Whether it is the national president of Congress or the state president, both come from this community. This is not a simple election but a fight to save the Indian Constitution,” Asha told people of Ravi Dass Community at the function.
