Karnal, March 1

Experts from different institutes of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) on Friday emphasised on the need of sustainable food production system by 2050 to meet the food demand of the increasing population. They discussed strategies for achieving the goal during a proramme organised to mark the 56th Foundation Day of the Central Soil and Salinity Research Institute (CSSRI), here.

Dr Narendra Kumar Tyagi, former member of the Agricultural Scientists Recruitment Board (ASRB) was the chief guest, who stressed on the reclamation of the salt-affected soils and said that by doing so, the pressure on normal soils could be reduced to a great extent. Besides, it will help in better carbon sequestration. “India should work on ecological footprint with global hectare as the parametre for measurement. It will help in creating resource balance in the ecology of the country with sustainable utilisation of natural resources,” said Dr Tyagi.

Dr Tyagi recalled his tenure as the Director of the CSSRI and shared the experience with the guests. He said he along with other scientists of the institute had worked a lot in the field of drainage engineering for fine tuning the sub-surface drainage technology for the reclamation of saline soil.

In the presence of Dr Gurbachan Singh, former chairman ASRB, Dr RK Yadav, Director, CSSRI, highlighted the achievements of the institute and said that during the past 55 years, the institute achieved many heights in the fields of saline soil reclamation. He expressed gratitude to all former directors and scientists who had worked to fulfil the mandate of the institute.

Meanwhile, three employees of the CSSRI were awarded with Best Workers Award of the institute. Dr PC Sharma, former Director CSSRI, Dr Gyanendra Singh, Director Indian Institute of Wheat and Barley (IIWBR), Dr SK Kamra, former head of the department of irrigation and drainage engineering, CSSRI Dr RN Yadav, head, IARI Regional Station, Karnal and Dr Manohar Lal Chhabra, Director of the Sugarcane Breeding Institute, Regional Centre, Karnal, were also present on the occasion.
