Experts mull changing scenario of print media
An interaction programme on “Changing scenario of reporting and editing in print media” was organised recently by the department of journalism and mass communication of Maharshi Dayanand University, bringing into focus the foundational pillars of journalistic excellence.
Journalist Parveen K Modi said the two critical pillars of journalism were reporting and editing.
“An intelligent reporter must compare different reports on the same issue to arrive at a deeper understanding,” he added.
Modi emphasised the importance of language skills, urging students to treat the dictionary as their best companion in building linguistic expertise.
Sharing several personal anecdotes and historical examples, he delved into journalistic integrity and the evolution of newsroom practices.
Head of Department Harish Kumar said the print media landscape was evolving rapidly, driven by the rise of digital platforms that were redefining reporting and editing roles. While print journalism remained relevant, the shift towards online news consumption had transformed how news was gathered and presented, he added.
Kumar said, in the new landscape, reporters were expected to be versatile, creating content for both print and online formats.
“They are incorporating multimedia elements like videos, infographics and interactive features to enhance storytelling. Social media has become a crucial tool for news gathering, reporting and audience engagement. Investigative journalism remains vital, but verifying information and presenting it concisely is more important than ever,” he added.
Dr Ravinder Dhillon, Associate Professor, CDLU, Sirsa; Assistant Professor Sunit Mukherjee; and Dr Naveen Kumar from MDU also expressed their views, while research scholar Priya conducted the programme and research scholar Jagroop Singh delivered the vote of thanks.
