Faridabad, July 23
As many as 19 persons, including five women, have been arrested in connection with the operation of a fake call centre being run in an industrial area here.
Abhimanyu Goyat, ACP, Cyber Cell, said the racket was busted after a team of the cyber cell and local police post raided Universal Tubes Abrasives, 20th Milestone, an industrial premises falling under the jurisdiction of the Sector 7 police station here on Monday. He said people running the call centre had no authority or permission.
The accused arrested from the spot were identified as Rakesh, Pradeep Kumar, Aapsan, Aman Raj, Xavier, Nitin Sharma, Charandeep Singh, Vinod Ram, Nishant Goswami, Amit, Raju, Sancho Patton, Alivish, Adarsh Kumar, Sana, Nisha, Iyengarkulam, Chumbeni Kokon and Raksha Tripathi.
The ACP said the police had received information that some persons were involved in online activity pertaining to cybercrime inside an industrial unit premises for the past some time.
He said the investigation has revealed that the accused working in the call centre were allegedly involved in rectification of technical errors in computers and networking system of US residents and had been charging them on the pretext of service and repairs through their network.
The fake call centre, whose name is yet to be revealed, is found to have registered on various websites and used to get contracts from customers, who approached the accused after getting their contact number online. It is claimed that callers from here used to get access to the consumers’ computers from here to get these repaired.
According to the police, the documents of the call centre revealed that the owner had been operating from the spot after getting a rent agreement with the plot owner in the name of a travel agency.
The police have recovered as many as 45 laptops and 17 phones from the spot. One Gaurav, reported to be the owner of the centre and a resident of Delhi, is absconding.
