Farm fires: Karnal DC suspends 2 sarpanches

The Deputy Commissioner has suspended two sarpanches after more than 20 farm fire incidents were reported in their villages.

Besides, the administration has also roped in around 300 NSS and NCC volunteers to keep a vigil on violators and for spreading awareness against stubble burning.

“I have suspended the sarpanches of Gonder and Ranwar villages for the occurrence of 30 and 20 cases of stubble burning, respectively, this year,” said Nishant Kumar Yadav, DC.

He said the Agriculture Department had imposed a fine of Rs 9.85 lakh on 392 farmers for violations and FIRs had been registered against 95 others for burning stubble, which was banned.

“Appreciation certificates will be given to the NSS and NCC volunteers for their contribution in saving environment,” Yadav added.

The DC said they would also honour the panchayats for their contribution in checking the stubble-burning cases. “There are several villages in the district that have worked hard in checking the stubble-burning cases. Thal village has no case of stubble burning against 15 last year, while Bilona reported three cases against 21 last year,” he added.

The DC said 98 gram panchayats had been given the crop residue management equipment.
