In recent days, increased humidity has led to an increase in pest and diseases, including whiteflies, greenflies, and bacterial blight, in guar crop. Without proper guidance, farmers may use inappropriate chemicals, causing more damage to their crops. To combat these issues, the farmers should accurately identify pests and diseases, and select the right treatment based on expert advice.

Dr BD Yadav, guar scientist (retd) from Haryana Agricultural University, addressed these concerns during a health training camp at Malikpura village in Sirsa. The camp was organised by assistant technology manager Dr Pawan Yadav and chaired by block technology manager Dr Vikram Jakhar.

Dr Yadav explained the farmers that bacterial blight initially causes yellowing of leaf edges, which can turn black and spread extensively in wet conditions. This disease can severely reduce crop yields, making early prevention crucial.

For treatment, Dr Yadav recommended mixing 30 gm of streptomycin and 400 gm of copper oxychloride in 200 litres of water per acre. If pests like greenflies and whiteflies are present, farmers can add 200 ml of malathion — 50 EC or dimethoate (Rogor) 30 EC to the mixture. Apply the spray 40-45 days after sowing and repeat every 12-15 days, he added. Farmers were advised to obtain a proper bill with batch numbers when purchasing chemicals and to check the expiration date on the bottles.
