Expressing solidarity with farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal, who has been on a fast-unto-death for the last 28 days at the Khanauri border protest site, a large number of farmers under the banner of Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) protested in the city on Monday.
They burnt the effigy of the government, urging the Union Government to save the life of Dallewal. Besides. They demanded an end to repression on farmers marching to Delhi, release of all farmers of Noida and Greater Noida from Luxer Jail, withdrawal of the National Agriculture Market Policy and initiation of a dialogue with all farmer organisations.
Farmers assembled at Kisan Bhawan and started a march towards Mahatma Gandhi Chowk, where they burnt the effigy. They also handed over a memorandum to the Civil Lines SHO Vishnu Miter for the President Droupadi Murmu.
BKU district president Surinder Ghuman and other farmer leaders Surinder Beniwal, Shyam Singh Mann and others accused the Union Government of not adhering to democratic principles of governance and holding discussions with all farmers' organisations and platforms, which are struggling for the genuine demands. “We demand that the President direct the Union Government to save the life of farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal, stop repression and tear gas shelling on farmers marching to Delhi, accept the genuine long-pending demands of farmers on MSP, loan waiver and others,” said farmer leaders.
They alleged that the Union government had violated the agreement signed with the SKM on December 9, 2021, in the wake of the historic farmers' struggle at Delhi borders that ensured repeal of three farm laws.
The farmer leaders said it was unfortunate that the Union Government was not ready to hold discussions with farmer organisations. "Consistent efforts are being made to brutally suppress the struggle of farmers at Shambu and Khanuri borders of Punjab and Noida-Greater Noida in Uttar Pradesh by using tear gas shells, rubber bullets, water cannons and by putting hundreds of farmers in jail for holding peaceful demonstrations and dharna.
