Mahavir Chowk, one of the busiest intersections at Narnaul city in the district, is all set to get a major upgrade in traffic management with the installation of modern, technology-driven traffic signal lights. The Narnaul Municipal Council has floated a tender to execute the project. The entire work would be carried out with an allocated budget of Rs 35 lakh.
“The decision to instal traffic signals at Mahavir Chowk has been taken due to the constant traffic congestion experienced throughout the day. To address this, signals will be installed in all four directions at the intersection. Additionally, blinkers will be put in place to further enhance visibility and road safety,” said Sunder Sheoran, Executive Engineer, Narnaul Municipal Council.
He maintained that the area was already equipped with CCTV cameras, which would work in tandem with the new traffic signals. It would also help in effective traffic monitoring and automatic issuance of challans in cases of red-light violations.
“A key feature of this new system is its adaptability. During specific hours — such as school dispersal in the evening — the green light duration can be adjusted through the app to allow smoother passage for school buses. Previously, such changes had to be managed manually, often leading to delays and confusion,” Sheoran pointed out.
A district official informed that traffic signals were installed at Mahavir Chowk over a decade ago; however, they did not remain functional for long. As a result, the district authorities had to deploy traffic police to manually manage the vehicular flow.
Sharing the details of modern traffic signal lights, Additional Deputy Commissioner and District Municipal Commissioner Dr Anand Kumar Sharma said the system would be based on advanced technology and can be controlled via a dedicated mobile application.
“This innovation will allow real-time management of traffic signals, including tracking VIP movement and remotely assigning green lights for VIP convoys whenever required. The overall control of this new system will be handed over to the traffic police,” said Sharma.
