The Hisar police have arrested the main accused in a fraud case for duping people on the promise of sending them abroad. The police said Mohit Chadda, alias Amardeep, a resident of Vasant Vihar in New Delhi, was arrested by the Economic Offenses Wing of the Hisar police in Vijay Nagar, Indore. He is now in four-day police remand.
Sub-Inspector Bir Singh said the case was registered on August 19, 2023, based on a complaint filed by Yadvender, a taxi driver residing in Bharat Nagar, Hisar. The complainant alleged that the accused, along with others, extorted a total of Rs 29.18 lakh from people on the promise of sending them to Canada.
Yadvender had said on July 30, 2023, he met a person named Gagan at a taxi stand, who claimed to be working for a company looking to recruit people for food packaging jobs in Canada. Gagan said the candidates needed valid passports, and Yadvender shared this information with his friends, who expressed interest in going to Canada.
The group was invited to a hotel in Chandigarh on August 4, 2023, where they were told that their visa process would take some time. Later, they were asked to come to Delhi, where, after a prolonged delay, they were told their visa would be processed in about a month. During their stay at the Taj Hotel in Mumbai, the accused demanded Rs 20,000 per head from them for learning English language that was paid online.
However, after several delays, the accused informed them that their visas would not be issued and they were sent home. The accused also took their mobile phones from the victims, following which they fled. The accused also took their mobile phones before fleeing.
