Poor sewerage, damaged roads and insanitary conditions — the three issues that stormed Lok Sabha and Vidhan Sabha elections last year for being unaddressed — are pivotal in the upcoming civic polls in Gurugram. As residents of Gurugram and Manesar gear up to elect their mayors independently, voters and local RWAs want candidates to offer solution to these three key problems that have largely remained unresolved for past seven years in the city.

According to the residents, Gurugram still has over 150 garbage vulnerable points and 65 damaged roads. Many of these areas have been in same state for at least three years. The latest crisis is the overflowing sewage as Municipal Corporation, Gurugram (MCG), and Municipal Corporation, Manesar (MCM), receive around such 50 complaints every day. Though the BJP and Congress are yet to put forth their candidates and many Independent candidates are yet to begin campaigning, the citizen groups have asked them to give solutions to the locals’ problems to get their vote.

“The city residents have been waiting for over two years to have their own civic public representatives. We want candidates to not politicise it, and provide solutions to our problems. We want them to share their vision. This is first time that we will directly choose our mayor. We are looking at the final solution to all that we have faced till now. Garbage-related issues and sewerage crisis are our two key concerns,” said Praveen Yadav of United Gurugram RWAs.

“The MP says civic issues are not his forte and the MLA, too, has failed to get any major success. Residential areas have turned into dumpyards,” said Rakesh Jinsi, president of Sector 17A RWA.

“The councillor is the key public representative and this time, the entire city will go for people who will ensure cleanliness in our city,” said Ruchika Sethi from Citizens for Clean Air Bharat.

“The poor condition of roads is the biggest concern among locals in Gurugram. We have raised the issue in Lok Sabha and Vidhan Sabha in the past, but the repair lasts for only 15-20 days. We demand all candidates for the posts for mayor and councillor to familiarise us with their vision,” said Praveen Malik from United Association of New Gurugram.
