Haryana Health Minister Arti Singh Rao assured the public today that there have been no reported cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) infection in the state. She emphasised that the Health Department is vigilant and fully prepared to handle any respiratory disease outbreaks, including influenza, HMPV and Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV).

Preventive measures

- Wash hands frequently with soap and water

- Avoid touching your face with unwashed hands

- Maintain distance from individuals with respiratory symptoms

- Cover mouth and nose while coughing or sneezing

- Disinfect frequently touched surfaces

- Stay hydrated and rest if unwell

- Wear a mask if experiencing symptoms like cough or cold

- Visit a healthcare centre if symptoms worsen

“All civil surgeons have been directed to make necessary arrangements for the treatment of respiratory diseases,” the minister said. An advisory issued by the Director General of Health Services (DGHS) has instructed civil surgeons to remain alert and ensure preparedness in their respective areas.

The advisory includes the establishment of designated flu corners at health centres, which will be equipped with adequate medicines, oxygen, ventilators and trained staff. District Health Officers have been instructed to ensure the availability of medications such as Oseltamivir in various forms, PPE kits, N-95 masks, reagent kits and viral transport media (VTM). Dedicated beds for seasonal influenza and respiratory diseases are also to be made available at these centres.

“Frequent handwashing and mask-wearing by individuals with cough or cold are essential preventive measures,” Rao said. She further emphasised the importance of public education campaigns on respiratory and hand hygiene, particularly during the winter season. Vulnerable groups, including children, the elderly, and pregnant women, will receive special attention.

Each District Surveillance Unit has been instructed to closely monitor trends of influenza-like illnesses and severe respiratory infections in their areas. “Samples should be tested in cases of severe symptoms,” Rao added. She also directed civil surgeons to hold regular consultations with the Indian Medical Association (IMA) and submit daily updates to the department.

Manish Bansal, Director General Health Services, explained that HMPV is a virus that causes respiratory infections in people of all ages. “Symptoms typically include cough, fever, nasal congestion, difficulty breathing and bronchitis, with severe cases potentially leading to pneumonia,” Bansal said.

HMPV spreads through respiratory droplets, close personal contact or touching contaminated surfaces and then touching the mouth, nose or eyes. Bansal reassured the public that most HMPV cases resolve within 2-5 days with supportive care such as rest, hydration and symptom management. Currently, there is no specific antiviral treatment or vaccine for HMPV.

To prevent infection, Bansal advised frequent handwashing, avoiding face-touching with unwashed hands, maintaining distance from sick individuals and staying home if unwell. He also emphasised disinfecting frequently touched surfaces and covering the mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing.

Bansal said, “Influenza, HMPV and RSV are common causes of respiratory infections during the winter months and public awareness and precaution are key to preventing their spread.”
