With poor lifting of garbage from secondary points, residents are witnessing a garbage mess in different parts of the city.
Have Informed KMC but no action taken
I have informed the KMC authorities as well as the contractor regarding the heaps of garbage in every nook and corner, but nobody has paid heed to this burning issue. Ramandeep Singh, Resident
Agency to deliver waste directly to plant
We have initiated the process for a fresh tender, in which no secondary point will be set up. The agency has to deliver the garbage directly to the plant from houses. Naresh Narwal, commissioner, Karnal Municipal Corporation
The mounting piles of garbage at secondary points are a nightmare for the residents and motorists as the waste is emitting foul smell. The situation has become difficult due to the poor lifting of garbage accompanied by two-day strike by employees on Wednesday and Thursday.
As per the information, there are around 40 secondary points where garbage collection employees dump the garbage daily after collecting it from residents. It is further taken to solid waste management plant for processing.
The severity of the problem can be gauged from the fact that the Karnal Municipal Corporation (KMC) and the agency is not lifting complete garbage from the secondary points on a daily basis. Since the garbage is not lifted regularly, tonnes of waste is still lying unattended at these points.
“The unattended garbage is spread on the roads emitting foul smell, which makes it difficult for pedestrians and others to move around in such areas,” said Dr Amanpreet Singh, a resident of Sector 9.
He alleged that there should be no secondary point in the city. Garbage should be collected from the residents directly and further taken to the processing plant.
The KMC has made a secondary point near Shaheed Udham Singh Chowk at Sector 32. The garbage is dumped here, but not lifted. As a result, the garbage dumps are swelling, attracting flies and stray animals. It has become a common sight, said Lalit Kumar, a local resident.
The situation is almost the same at Ramlila ground, old vegetable market and other localities where the secondary garbage dumping points are set up.
