With the illegal dumping of waste from Delhi in Gurugram reportedly leading to sanitation crises in border areas, the local police will soon erect 'garbage check nakas'.
The Gurugram administration has asked the police to step up vigil along the Gurugram-Delhi border and erect nakas to check the dumping of solid and C and D waste in the city.
Gurugram MLA Mukesh Sharma had alleged that four areas along the border — Bajghera, Sector 21, Wazirabad and Carterpuri village of Gurugram — had been converted into illegal dumpyards. He had highlighted how several trucks managed to enter Gurugram around midnight, right under the nose of the Gurugram and Delhi police, to dump garbage.
Taking a stern stance, the local administration formed four teams to be headed by ACPs and also asked the police to set up nakas to check every vehicle carrying waste and entering Gurugram.
“The police have nakas at the border, but generally, waste-carrying vehicles are not a priority. We have asked them to set up nakas at night to check any vehicle illegally entering the city with waste. We have caught one vehicle and investigations are on to find out details about the contractors,” said DC Ajay Kumar while speaking to The Tribune.
Even residents of these areas have formed their own vigil teams, and while they try to keep illegal dumping mafia at bay, a majority fail to deal with goons driving these vehicles.
Sharma has already written to the CM, asking him to speak to the Delhi authorities to check the menace. “We are struggling with waste management and cannot bear the burden of even a tonne of waste from any other city. The entire administration, MCG and residents are working on reducing illegal dumpyards, and here we have waste from Delhi coming in,” he said.
