Karnal, February 16
Several birds were injured in incidents related to kite-flying during Basant Panchami here. Among the affected birds that got entangled in glass-coated kite strings, six were brought to Jivo Manglam — a dedicated birds’ care home being operated by a non-governmental organisation (NGO) in Sector 6 here.
However, there were several other birds that remained unattended and could not be brought to the centre for treatment. According to information, of these six birds, one succumbed to its injuries, while two have been treated. The treatment of three other birds is still underway at the centre.
Sadhvi Archita, who is actively involved in the treatment of the injured birds, said one of the birds suffered a cut on the throat due to the string, adding that despite their best efforts, it did not survive. Some other birds got entangled in the string, which completely damaged their wings.
She said Jivo Manglam has been operating under the guidance of Sadhvi Santosh Kumari to provide care to the injured birds. “We are providing healthcare facilities to injured birds, with a doctor visiting the institute daily,” she added.
Doctors suggested the people to avoid using glass-coated strings as it not only posed a threat to birds, but also bikers and pedestrians.
