Gurugram: GMDA, civic body join hands with Korean firm to enhance water quality
Gurugram, July 21
The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) is set to upgrade all water-boosting tanks under the jurisdiction of the authority and the Gurugram Municipal Corporation (MC) in a bid to supply clean potable water to the metropolitan city.
In this regard, GMDA CEO A Sreenivas met a delegation of South Korea-based firm Hansamkora Limited. During the meeting, the proposal for lining all tanks with stainless steel was discussed. This would not only augment the lifespan of the tanks, but also help curb the contamination of water.
“The GMDA is already working on boosting water treatment capacity, and the expansion of the water supply pipeline network to newer sectors. It is also aiming to adopt the best possible water quality management practices to ensure that residents have access to safe, pure and high-quality drinking water,” Sreenivas said.
A joint venture of the GMDA, the Gurugram MC and the Hansamkora Limited has been planned. Under the pilot project of the venture, the company will coat one tank each of the GMDA and the civic body.
The Korean Government is supporting this pilot project.
According to Hansamkora representatives, coating the inner walls of the water tanks would eliminate the accumulation of algae in the tanks and solve the issue of leakages.
Additionally, it would also double the lifespan of the tank. Presently, the average lifespan of a cement concrete tank is 10-15 years. Lining of the tanks with stainless steel would extend the lifespan to 30-40 years. Also, the risks of contamination in coated tanks is said to be negligible.
The model, if found successful in the pilot project, would be replicated in all water-boosting tanks.
