GMDA installs CCTVs at waste collection points to curb illegal garbage dumping
The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has installed CCTV cameras at eight secondary waste collection points across the city to monitor and take legal action against unauthorised waste dumping.
During a meeting Additional Commissioner of the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG), Dr Balpreet Singh said by the end of December, CCTV surveillance would be extended to a total of 14 secondary waste collection points. The eight locations currently under surveillance include Atul Kataria Chowk, Sheetla Mata Mandir, Roshanpura vegetable market, Beriwala Bagh, Chakkarpur, Bandhwari, Khandsa and near the judicial court parking. He said CCTV cameras would also be installed at six additional locations — Badshahpur, Fazilpur, Sikanderpur, Choma, Carterpuri and Dhanwapur — by the end of the month.
Dr Singh instructed GMDA officials to make the Bulk Waste Generators (BWG) portal user-friendly, to streamline the registration process. Additionally, he emphasised the need for transparency, proposing that the portal should provide real-time data on the number of registered BWGs and those penalised for non-compliance.
Dr Singh added while BWGs may manage their waste through private agencies, it is mandatory for them to register on the portal to ensure proper waste management and accountability. MCG officials believe unregistered BWGs are illegally dumping their waste at secondary collection points, rather than managing it on their own premises. The installation of CCTV cameras at these points and the enforcement of BWG registration are aimed at curbing illegal waste dumping and improving the city’s cleanliness.
