GMDA to award contract for Southern Peripheral Road repair after elections
The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) plans to allocate the job for the repair, restructuring and strengthening of a 5.5-km stretch of the Southern Peripheral Road (SPR) after the forthcoming municipal elections in Gurugram and other towns across the state.
The GMDA had already invited tenders for the project in December last year and the tender allotment committee opened the bids a few days ago. However, due to the model code of conduct in place for the civic elections, the job has not yet been awarded to the construction company with the lowest bid.
Confirming this to The Tribune, Arun Dhankar, Chief Engineer (Infra-1) of the GMDA, said the allocation would take place once the municipal elections are concluded.
He said the initial cost estimate for the project was Rs 9.65 crore, covering the stretch from Vatika Chowk to NH-48 near Kherki Daula. However, the tender was approved at Rs 8.10 crore, which is 16 per cent lower than the rates specified in the Detailed Notice Inviting Tender (DNIT). The construction company M/s JS Synergies submitted the lowest bid of Rs 8.19 crore, 15.06 per cent lower than the DNIT rates. Following negotiations, the rate was further reduced to Rs 8.10 crore.
In addition to the repairs, the GMDA plans to build new slip roads along this stretch of the highway to provide more space for local commuters. A few months ago, the authority also completed repairs on another section of the SPR from Ghata to Vatika Chowk.
The SPR is a crucial link connecting the southern parts of Gurugram to national highways, offering easy access to Delhi, Jaipur, Mumbai and other major cities. The construction of slip roads and the highway’s restructuring is expected to ease traffic congestion in the city, providing much-needed relief to local commuters.
