Three and a half months after the commencement of the academic session, hundreds of students of government schools in the district continue to suffer in the absence of textbooks.
As per the data collected by The Tribune, students of classes I and VI are waiting to get their textbooks. There are around 20,500 such students in both classes. However, scores of students of other classes up to VIII are yet to receive books of various subjects in the majority of the schools. “I have received almost all books except English and math, due to which I am facing problem in completing my syllabus,” said a student of Class VIII.
In the absence of textbooks, students and teachers are managing with either old books or with scanned copies of each lesson, said the teacher of a government school in Assandh block.
“The academic session started on April 1, but even after three and a half months, we are yet to receive books from the state headquarters. We have to manage either with old books or with scanned copies, which are brought by the students from their homes,” said a teacher on the condition of anonymity.
A student of Class VI said they had not been given the textbooks, which was hampering their studies.
A teacher said there was lack of coordination in terms of distribution of books. These books should have been distributed prior to the starting of the academic session. “Hundreds of students are yet to receive the textbooks. All students should have been given books on time,” he added. In some schools, the students were provided books only last week, said a teacher.
“We received books of VII, and VIII last week,” said a teacher of Indri block.
Meanwhile, the authorities are claiming availability of books with students. “We have provided new books to all students except of Classes I and VI and we have provided old books to those who are left, so that their studies are not affected,” said Rohtash Verma, District Elementary Education Officer (DEEO). All students will be provided books soon, he added.
