Karnal, February 5
In a major breakthrough, Karnal, Kaithal, and Kurukshetra police in a joint operation traced a parcel containing jewellery worth around Rs 1.5 crore.
The parcel was reportedly stolen from a Himachal Roadways bus when it stopped at a food joint (dhaba) near Nilokheri on the intervening night of Sunday and Monday, said officials.
The recovery was made possible with the help of a GPS tracker in the parcel of a courier company that was going to Chandigarh from Delhi.
Fearing arrest near Chandlana toll tax in Kaithal district, the accused managed to escape after leaving the car. However, they allegedly took some jewellery from the parcel which is currently being assessed, said the police.
Police said there were three accused, and it is suspected that they targeted the bus from Delhi.
Preliminary investigations suggest that information regarding the valuable parcel might have been leaked either within the courier company or at the dispatch location, said officials.
SHO Butana police station, Jagdish Pandey said two employees of the courier company – Prem and Dharmendra – left from Delhi to Chandigarh on the bus to hand over the parcel. The incident took place when the bus stopped at a dhaba and both the employees went to the washroom, leaving the parcel in the bus, he added.
SP Shashank Kumar Sawan said the accused have been identified and teams are working to apprehend them. A case has been registered and further investigation is under way, he added.
