After a gap of nearly 4 months, the processing and bio-remediation of solid waste at Bandhwari landfill site has begun. This was stated by the Commissioner of the Municipal Corporation, Gurugram (MCG), Ashok Kumar Garg, here on Monday.

At least 13 lakh metric tonnes (MT) of solid waste was accumulated at the site, of which 8.84 lakh MT is the legacy waste. As such, the processing and bio-remediation of solid waste at the site had become a daunting task for the civic body.

“Now, we hope that the private agencies hired by us will speed up the work to clear the legacy waste and then streamline the processing of daily waste coming on the site from Gurugram and Faridabad,” he said.

MCG Executive Engineer (Swacch Bharat Mission) Nijesh Manderna said, “We have asked the agencies to clear the legacy waste in four months besides streamlining the processing of daily incoming waste.” The agencies had also been asked to set up adequate infrastructure to process at least 3 lakh MT waste each month, he said.

The waste treatment work was suspended four months ago after the work orders of private agencies hired by the MCG expired on completion of their terms as per the contract. After the suspension of work, the MCG immediately floated tenders to hire new agencies for waste management. The bids were opened and the firms were provisionally selected to do the job.

As per the government rules, the official papers with regard to the tenders, the opening of bids and the selection of agencies were sent to the directorate of Urban Local Bodies Department for approval in December last year.

But the department took two months to grant approval for the selection of agencies.

A total of 30.43 lakh MT legacy waste was assessed in January 2023. At least, 6.06 lakh MT fresh waste was added to it by the end of December 2023. From January 1, 2024, to November 30, 2024, at least 6.10 lakh MT fresh waste was also added to it. In 2023, a total of 16.50 lakh MT waste was processed by the executing agencies hired by the MCG apart from the 17.25 lakh MT processed in the last year.

At least 1, 200 MT to 1500 MT solid waste is generated daily in Gurugram and 800 MT to 1,000 MT in Faridabad, most of which goes to the Bandhwari landfill site.

A few months ago, the MCG made efforts to acquire land at Daulatabad in Gurugram and Indri in Nuh for the processing of fresh waste, but due to large scale protests by locals, the civic body could not develop these solid waste management sites.

Following this, the MCG requested the Haryana State Industrial Development Corporation to allocate 15 acres of land at Fazilwas village in Gurugram district, out of the 1,128 acres of land acquired by it for the expansion of the industrial township of Manesar on rental basis. This request is pending before the industrial corporation for consideration.
