Gurugram MC election postponed 'until further orders'
The Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) election for Senior Deputy Mayor and Deputy Mayor, scheduled for August 11, has been postponed until further orders. Citing administrative reasons, MC Commissioner Pradeep Dahiya said, "We will be declaring the new date soon."
It has been five months since the MCG mayoral elections were held. Last week, the Manesar Corporation held election for the post of Deputy and Senior Deputy Mayor. This election too has become Rao versus Rao. Following a high-voltage political drama and an 'anti-horse trading' trip to Nepal, the candidates of Narbir camp won both the posts, while the councillors of Rao Inderjit's camp — including the Mayor — skipped the election. Both camps are facing each other yet again, and sources claim that the lack of consensus on names within the party is the reason behind postponing the election.
In March, the BJP secured 24 of 36 seats in the MCG polls, achieving a majority for the first time. The sources said the party was expected to receive support from four or five Independent councillors, increasing the majority to 29.
"The party is yet to finalise the names. It is for unanimous elections to keep all united. However, if both camps don't agree, it may come down to voting," said a senior party leader from Chandigarh.
"It was BJP candidates who won the Manesar MC posts, and BJP candidates will also win the MCG election. The party is united," claimed state minister Rao Narbir.
