Gurugram, often dubbed the “Booze City” of Haryana, not only leads the state in excise revenue but also in drunken driving challans, according to Haryana Police data.

Road safety top priority

Road safety is top priority of Haryana police. It’s sad that more people die on roads in accidents than in crimes like murders. The accidents are man-made disasters and we need to avoid that. We have zero tolerance to drunk driving and strict punishments like jail term will be handed out to offenders.

— OP Singh, DGP Haryana

From January 1 to November 24, 2025, police issued 63,073 drunk driving challans across Haryana. Of these, Gurugram alone accounted for 24,972 challans, far ahead of other districts. Faridabad followed with 7,402 challans, Karnal (4,851), Panchkula (4,180) and Jind (3,109).

During his recent visit to Gurugram, DGP OP Singh acknowledged the city’s vibrant night culture but stressed that enforcement against drunken driving would remain stringent. He said there would be “zero tolerance to drunken driving menace” and announced mandatory jail terms for offenders.

Police officials say the high number of challans reflects effective on-road surveillance and sustained enforcement drives. To further strengthen action, the state has issued fresh directives to all district police units.

Under the new guidelines, special police teams are being stationed at toll plazas between 6 pm and 10 pm, equipped with alco-sensor devices and e-challan machines for immediate checks and penalties. The police emphasise that the aim is not just to punish offenders but to drive home the message that road safety is a shared responsibility.
