Army veterans of Defence Colony in Sector 17-A here have written to Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini seeking his intervention in early resolution of their grievances related to civic issues.

“The plots in this sector were allotted to armed forces personnel. It is still home to many of them and former IAS, IPS, judges, etc... a majority of residents are senior or super senior citizens, civic issues are now getting chronic,” reads the letter.

The key issues highlighted by residents include waterlogging, which has been worsened by the recently laid stormwater drain. The laying of this drain led to digging up of roads which haven't been recarpeted yet. The residents allege that the footpaths have been either encroached upon, modified or damaged, rendering them unusable for senior citizens.

Authorities of no help

The civic authorities are of no help. We now want the Chief Minister to provide us the quality of living HSVP promised while allocating the plots. We seek right to peaceful life.

Rakesh Jinsi, President, RWA Sector 17-A

In addition to these, residents battle insufficient water supply, poor sanitation, voltage fluctuations and a poor sewerage system. “Our sector is adjacent to Sukhrali village in which the construction activity is not

controlled or governed by the Municipal Corporation rules. Over the years, many multi-storied buildings have come up in this village, which are primarily used for providing PG accommodation. With the increasing population, the sewerage system has completely collapsed and sector sewers are always blocked and overflowing. We need a separate sewerage line,” added the letter.

The residents also highlighted the illegal use of residential properties for commercial purposes and unhygienic conditions in the market area which is full of stray animals. The lack of security has been cited as another key concern as this sector does not have any boundary walls.
