Gurugram VHP seeks probe into MBBS seat allocation in Katra college
Says only eight of 50 MBBS seats given to Hindus
The Gurugram unit of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), along with Bajrang Dal activists and representatives of various social organisations, on Friday submitted a memorandum to the district administration alleging irregularities in MBBS admissions at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Medical College in Katra, Jammu & Kashmir.
The delegation claimed that out of 50 MBBS seats, only eight were allotted to Hindu students, calling it a “serious imbalance” that, they said, raises questions of fairness at an institution located in a key Hindu pilgrimage centre.
The memorandum was part of a nationwide campaign by the VHP seeking transparency and parity in admissions to institutions associated with religious or charitable bodies.
District incharge Praveen Hindustani said the issue had implications for basic constitutional rights. “Articles 29 and 30, in their present interpretation, appear to limit equal access for the Hindu community to institutions established through Hindu charitable resources. Such imbalance affects the rights of the majority and goes against the broader spirit of justice,” he said. He added that the admission pattern at an institution as culturally and spiritually significant as Vaishno Devi “must reflect fairness and community representation.”
VHP district president Surender Tanwar urged the President of India to intervene. “This situation reflects inequality and injustice towards the Hindu community. We demand a transparent investigation, accountability for the process, and assurance that institutions set up by the Hindu community uphold cultural balance and equal opportunity,” he said. He stressed the need for mechanisms to prevent similar disputes in future admission cycles.
The memorandum was received by the Naib Tehsildar on behalf of the district administration, who assured the delegation that it would be forwarded to the appropriate authorities. The protest remained peaceful, with participants stating that their intention was simply to ensure that their concerns reach the highest constitutional office.
