Panic gripped the area near the New Railway Road after a fire broke out at a medical store on Tuesday morning. Over 30 fire engines were pressed into service to douse flames, which were finally brought under control after 11 hours.

The building developed cracks due to the fire, whose one part was badly damaged, after which the movement of vehicles was stopped on the New Railway Road. As the police diverted traffic on alternative routes, long traffic jams were witnessed on the Old Railway Road, Madanpuri road, Sector 12 road, Sheetla Mata road as well as the streets of nearby colonies.

According to a fire official, at 5 am, they got information that a fire broke out on the second floor of Dang Medical Store on the New Railway Road on Tuesday.

In the three-storey shop, medicines were sold on the ground floor, a medicine store room was made in the basement, first and second floors where sanitisers, HIT and highly inflammable items were also kept, due to which the fire spread rapidly.

Fire officer Rameshwar Singh said when their team reached the spot, they called the shop owner Sanjay Dang, while the fire was mainly limited to the second floor.

Singh said, “Sanjay tried to take out stuff from the ground floor, but could only manage to take out laptop and other documents before the fire started taking its “monstrous” form.”

Officials said 30 fire tenders were rushed the spot and these had to be refilled more than 200 times and brought to the spot so that the fire could be controlled.

The medical store was housed in an L-shaped building. On one side, there were IndusInd Bank, a coaching institute and a pizza shop, while on the other side, was a Honda showroom.

Some officials of the Fire Department team reached the roof of the adjacent building around 3 pm and tried to control the fire by breaking a part of the wall. As bricks and plaster started falling from the building, people living in nearby houses were also evacuated from their houses.

“The fire was finally brought under control, but the shop was completely damaged in the fire. No one was hurt in the incident. The cause behind the fire has not been ascertained yet,” said the fire officer.
