Governor Bandaru Dattatreya, who is also the Chancellor of Maharishi Valmiki Sanskrit University, Mundri, has emphasised the importance of technology, innovation and research in achieving excellence.
He highlighted the significance of Sanskrit, stating that it was the root of almost all Indian languages.
He expressed satisfaction over the increasing promotion of Sanskrit, and praised the university’s scholars for enriching the nation with knowledge through the release of multiple books during the convocation.
Speaking at the first convocation ceremony of the university, held at the RKSD College auditorium in Kaithal, on Wednesday, Dattatreya awarded degrees to 527 graduates and postgraduates — 131 undergraduate students (Shastri, BA courses) and 396 postgraduate students (Acharya, MA courses).
As many as 38 students received gold medals for academic excellence.
The Governor urged students to look beyond mere employment and aim to become job creators rather than job seekers.
Sharing his personal journey, he accredited his rise from a humble background to the Governor post to his mother’s insistence on quality education.
He stressed the importance of quality higher education, stating that India’s progress depended on it.
He also lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the New Education Policy (NEP) — introducing courses in Hindi and regional languages to ensure that education was accessible to underprivileged students.
He said Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini had made significant budgetary provisions to strengthen the education sector.
Dattatreya underscored the role of research in elevating education, stating that Sanskrit should continue to flourish as it held immense cultural and intellectual significance. He encouraged students to take pride in their native language and work towards promoting India’s rich heritage globally.
He urged young scholars to engage in research on Sanskrit scriptures — including the Vedas, Puranas, Ramayana and the Mahabharata — and contribute to knowledge dissemination.
The Governor unveiled five books and a research paper at the event.
He praised the university’s student welfare initiatives and lauded the fact that 180 female students were among those awarded degrees.
Expressing his appreciation for Kaithal’s female-led administration, he encouraged the university to hold the next convocation on its campus, urging the swift completion of its Rs 40-crore infrastructure project.
